As
the capital of Hokkaido
and Japan's fifth largest city Sapporo was the host of the 1972
Winter Olympic games.
It is a relatively new city, which may explain it's well
thought out, orderly structure.
It is also famous for its delicious ramen
and 'Sapporo Beer'. Convenient, clean and uncomplicated, this city is very
popular for both the Japanese and the non Japanese.
Places to visit:
Odori
- Sapporo's main shopping district, it accomodates
the most famous
Japanese department stores while at the same time, providing
ample
space
for the less obvious stores. The stores are interconnected
by a series
of
underground passages which will keep you warm during those
cold winter months.
Odori Park
- Situated just by Odori shopping district, it is a popular
area for people
of all ages. In the summer friends and family sit and
enjoy the idealistic Hokkaido
weather and in the winter, it plays host to the annual Sapporo
Snow festival of
breathtaking snow sculptures and brilliant illuminations.
Susukino
- The dining and entertainment district of Sapporo;
With the thousands of bars and restaurants occupying this
area, the bright neon
lights are enough to hurt ones eyes.
Sapporo International
Communications Plaza - Located just opposite
the city's oldest landmark (the Sapporo Clocktower), this centre is indispensible
for travel information (especially within Hokkaido).
