What are Ryokans?
 |
Traditionally, ryokans are Japanese style inns dating back to the Edo period and they were used by travelers along Japan's highways. Ryokans serve both breakfast and dinner and guests will sleep on futons. The appearance and atmosphere created by ryokans is considered more important than modern conveniences. Ryokans tends to appeal to people who would like to emmerse themselves and experience Japanese culture. |
| Guestrooms are made by using tradtional Japanese methods. The flooring is tatami, woven rush straw and stuffed with rice straw, and there will be sliding doors. In most cases, there will be a communal bathing area using water from a natural hot spring, if any are nearby. Ryokans also provide a kimono style garment and usually you will have supplies for making green tea. |
